Social and Community Participation
What It Means for You
If you’ve ever wondered how your NDIS plan can support you in getting more involved in your community, making new friends, or building confidence in social settings, this one’s for you.
Social and Community Participation is funding that shows up in both the Core and Capacity Building sections of your NDIS plan. You’ll usually find it under Core Supports as “Assistance with Social & Community Participation” (Support Category 04).
What is Social and Community Participation really about
At its heart, Social and Community Participation is about helping you get out, connect with others, and do more of what you love. Whether it’s trying something new, joining a local group, going to events, or building your confidence through classes, this support is here to help you feel included and live life your way. There are two parts to this kind of funding, explained below.
Assistance with Social and Community Participation (Core Supports – Cat 4)
This funding helps you stay connected and involved in everyday community life. It could mean support to get to a local doctor or allied health appointment, joining a regular art class, attending a sporting event, or simply spending time with others doing something enjoyable and social. It’s all about making sure you can participate in the things that matter to you.
We also support school-aged participants with before and after school care, especially when a student's disability impacts their daily activities. This may include getting ready for the day, transport to and from school, and support during transitions to make things a little easier and more manageable.
Increased Social and Community Participation (Capacity Building – Cat 9)
This one is all about building your confidence and skills over time. Think of it like training for your social life. It might involve coaching, mentoring, or structured programs that help you become more independent and engaged. Some examples of what this might cover include:
Cooking classes to help you feel more confident in the kitchen while learning new skills.
Outdoor adventure activities like hiking or group camps can help build teamwork and resilience
